Same-Day CEREC Crowns in Hillsboro — One Visit, No Temporary

A traditional dental crown takes two appointments two to three weeks apart, with a temporary crown in between. A CEREC same-day crown at East Wind Dental Care is designed, milled, and permanently bonded in a single visit — typically about two hours from numbing to walkout. No goopy impression trays, no temporary that pops off while you eat, no second appointment to take off work. To schedule a same-day crown, call (503) 614-0198.

What Is a CEREC Same-Day Crown?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It is a CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) workflow that lets Dr. Merat Ostovar design and mill a permanent ceramic crown right in the office instead of sending an impression to an outside lab. The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) recognizes monolithic ceramic crowns produced by chairside CAD/CAM as a clinically validated option for restoring damaged teeth.

In our Hillsboro office the workflow uses a Sirona Primescan intraoral scanner for the digital impression and a CEREC MC X mill to fabricate the crown from a solid block of lithium disilicate or zirconia ceramic.

“The two-visit crown made sense in 1985 when impressions had to ship to a lab. Today the digital scan is more accurate than analog impressions, the mill sits ten feet from the chair, and the patient walks out with a final restoration the same morning. There is no clinical reason to wear a temporary for three weeks for most cases.” — Dr. Merat Ostovar, DMD, FAGD

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fully covers a damaged or weakened tooth. Dr. Ostovar typically recommends a crown when:

  • A tooth is cracked or fractured and at risk of breaking further
  • A large cavity has compromised too much tooth structure for a filling to hold
  • A tooth has been treated with root canal therapy and needs protection from fracture
  • An old filling is failing — large or leaking restorations need to be replaced with a stronger one
  • A tooth is severely worn, misshapen, or discolored and a veneer cannot give enough coverage
  • A dental implant needs its final crown placed on the abutment
  • In most of these situations, the same-day workflow eliminates the temporary phase and finishes the case in one visit.

How Does the Same-Day Crown Process Work?

    Step 1: Preparation (15–20 minutes)

After local anesthesia (with topical numbing gel applied first), Dr. Ostovar removes any decay or damaged tooth structure and shapes the tooth so the crown will seat with about 1–2mm of clearance on every surface. This is the same preparation a traditional crown requires.

Step 2: Digital Scanning (2–3 minutes)

Instead of an impression tray full of putty, the Sirona Primescan captures a precise 3D image of the prepared tooth, the adjacent teeth, and the opposing bite. The scan appears on the chairside monitor in real time.

Step 3: Crown Design (10–15 minutes)

Using CEREC CAD software, Dr. Ostovar designs the crown digitally — contour, contact points, biting surface, and margin fit. The software proposes a starting shape based on the surrounding tooth anatomy, and Dr. Ostovar fine-tunes every line. You can watch the design appear on the monitor if you want.

    Step 4: In-Office Milling (10–15 minutes)

The approved design is sent wirelessly to the CEREC MC X milling unit. Diamond burs carve the crown out of a solid block of high-strength ceramic — typically lithium disilicate (e.max) or zirconia. While the mill runs, you relax in the chair.

    Step 5: Try-In, Adjustment, Bonding (15–20 minutes)

Dr. Ostovar tries the milled crown on the prepared tooth, verifies the fit and bite with articulating paper, and makes any tiny adjustments. The tooth is etched, a bonding agent is applied, and the crown is cemented with light-cured resin — a permanent bond that hardens in seconds. Excess cement is cleared, the bite is rechecked, and the crown is polished.

You leave with a permanent ceramic crown the same morning.

Same-Day CEREC vs. Traditional Two-Visit Crowns

    | Factor | CEREC Same-Day Crown | Traditional Lab Crown |
    |—|—|—|
    | Visits | 1 visit (~2 hours) | 2 visits, 2–3 weeks apart |
    | Impression | Digital scan (no tray) | Physical impression material |
    | Temporary crown | Not needed | Required for 2–3 weeks |
    | Time off work | 1 appointment | 2 appointments |
    | Material options | Lithium disilicate, zirconia | Porcelain, zirconia, PFM, gold |
    | Marginal fit | Sub-millimeter digital precision | Lab-dependent |
    | Aesthetics | Excellent monolithic ceramic | Excellent — more layering options |
    | Lifespan | 10–15+ years | 10–15+ years |
    | Cost | $1,000–$1,800 | $1,000–$1,800 |

When a Traditional Lab Crown May Still Be the Better Call

CEREC handles most cases beautifully, but Dr. Ostovar will recommend a lab crown when:

  • A patient grinds heavily and needs full-contour zirconia in a thickness the in-office mill cannot produce
  • A front tooth needs hand-layered porcelain with multiple shades and translucency gradients for the most natural cosmetic result
  • A multi-unit bridge spans a long edentulous area where lab fabrication adds reliability
  • Both options last 10–15+ years when designed and bonded correctly. The decision is clinical, not financial.

What Are CEREC Crowns Made Of?

In our Hillsboro office, same-day crowns are milled from one of two ceramic materials:

  • Lithium disilicate (e.max) — the workhorse for front and premolar crowns. High strength, excellent translucency for natural appearance, bonds chemically to tooth structure.
  • Zirconia (monolithic or zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate) — for posterior crowns and patients with heavy grinding. Higher fracture resistance, slightly less translucency than e.max.
  • Dr. Ostovar selects the material based on tooth position, bite forces, and aesthetic priority. Both materials are biocompatible, metal-free, and FDA-cleared for permanent restorations.

How Much Does a Same-Day CEREC Crown Cost in Hillsboro?

A CEREC same-day crown at East Wind Dental Care typically costs $1,000 to $1,800, comparable to a traditional lab crown. The exact cost depends on tooth position (molar vs. front tooth), material chosen, and complexity of the case.

    | Treatment | Typical Cost |
    |—|—|
    | Single CEREC crown (premolar/molar) | $1,000–$1,500 |
    | Single CEREC crown (front tooth) | $1,200–$1,800 |
    | CEREC crown after root canal | $1,000–$1,800 |
    | CEREC crown on a dental implant | $1,500–$2,500 |

    Same-Day Crowns for Specific Situations

Emergency Crown for a Broken Tooth

If you fracture a tooth, Dr. Ostovar can often prepare and place a same-day CEREC crown during the emergency visit. You leave with a permanent restoration instead of going home with a fragile temporary on a compromised tooth.

    Crown After Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy leaves the treated tooth structurally weakened. A crown protects it from fracture. The root canal and the permanent CEREC crown can often be done in a single extended visit.

    Replacing an Old, Failing Crown

If an existing crown is cracked, leaking, or has decay underneath, Dr. Ostovar removes the old crown, treats the underlying tooth, and places a new CEREC crown — all in one appointment.

    Crown on a Dental Implant

Once a dental implant has fully integrated with the jawbone (typically 3–6 months after surgical placement), the final CEREC crown can be designed and placed on the implant abutment in one visit.

Frequently Asked Questions — Same-Day CEREC Crowns Hillsboro

How long does a same-day CEREC crown appointment take?

About two hours from numbing to walkout. The digital scan takes 2–3 minutes, design takes 10–15 minutes, milling takes 10–15 minutes, and the rest of the time covers preparation, try-in, adjustment, and bonding. You can read, watch your phone, or bring headphones during the milling phase.

Are CEREC same-day crowns as durable as traditional lab crowns?

Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from the same high-strength ceramic materials lab crowns use — lithium disilicate (e.max) and zirconia. Long-term clinical studies show comparable survival rates: 10–15+ years with good home care. The material is identical; the only difference is where the crown was fabricated.

How much does a same-day CEREC crown cost in Hillsboro?

A CEREC crown at East Wind Dental Care typically costs $1,000 to $1,800, comparable to traditional lab crowns. Most dental insurance plans cover crowns at 50% under the major restorative benefit. VIP Membership Plan members receive 15% off ($299/year adults), and CareCredit, Sunbit, and Cherry Health financing are available.

Do I still need a temporary crown with CEREC?

No. That is the main advantage of CEREC. Your permanent crown is designed, milled, and bonded during a single appointment. No temporary, no waiting period, no second visit, no risk of a temporary popping off while you eat.

Can I get a CEREC crown during a dental emergency?

In most cases, yes. If you break a tooth and the nerve is not damaged, Dr. Ostovar can often prepare and place a same-day CEREC crown during an emergency appointment. If root canal therapy is needed first, the crown may be placed immediately after the root canal during the same extended visit.

What materials are used in CEREC crowns at East Wind Dental Care?

We mill from solid blocks of lithium disilicate (e.max) or zirconia. Lithium disilicate is the standard for front and premolar crowns because of its translucency and strength. Zirconia is selected for posterior crowns and patients with heavy bite forces. Both materials are biocompatible, metal-free, and FDA-cleared.

Is a CEREC crown a good option for a front tooth?

Yes. CEREC milled lithium disilicate provides excellent translucency and shade matching for front teeth. For highly complex cosmetic cases — a single front tooth that has to match seven existing teeth perfectly — Dr. Ostovar may recommend a lab-fabricated crown so a ceramist can hand-layer porcelain for the most natural result. He will tell you which approach fits your case before any tooth preparation begins.

How long do CEREC crowns last?

CEREC crowns typically last 10 to 15 years with good home care. Many last 20 years or longer. Longevity depends on bite forces (heavy grinders should wear a night guard), home hygiene at the crown margin, and whether the underlying tooth develops decay at the margin over time. Regular checkups every six months catch margin issues early.
