What Counts as a Dental Emergency for Intel Employees?

Five situations that justify leaving a meeting and calling our office.

Severe toothache that throbs constantly or wakes you up at night usually means the nerve is inflamed or an abscess is forming. Treated with root canal therapy, extraction, or abscess drainage.

Broken or chipped tooth from biting something hard during a meal or a fall. Treated with bonding for small chips, a same-day CEREC crown for larger fractures, or root canal followed by a crown if the nerve is exposed.

Knocked-out permanent tooth — typically from a sports injury or accident. Time-critical: pick up the tooth by the crown, store in cold milk, and head straight to our office. The 30-to-60-minute window matters.

Lost crown or filling exposes the underlying tooth. Save the crown if you have it — we can often re-cement it. See us within 24 to 48 hours to prevent decay or sensitivity.

Dental abscess with throbbing pain, facial swelling, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth. Same-day drainage and antibiotics are required to stop the infection from spreading.

If you have airway-threatening swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a high fever, go to the ER first. For everything else dental, call (503) 614-0198.

How Do I Get to East Wind from the Intel Campuses?

Drive times in normal traffic.

From Ronler Acres (RA): Cornell Road east about 1.8 miles to NE Shaleen St. 5 to 6 minutes.

From Hawthorn Farm (HF): Cornell Road west about 2 miles to NE Shaleen St. 6 to 7 minutes.

From Jones Farm (JF): Cornell Road north about 3 miles to NE Shaleen St. 7 to 8 minutes.

Free parking directly in front of the building. No parking garage, no long walks. Most emergency visits run 60 to 90 minutes from check-in to a clear treatment plan, so you can realistically be back at your desk the same afternoon.

What Happens During an Emergency Visit?

A predictable flow that doesn’t waste your time.

  1. Phone triage (5 minutes): Our front desk asks targeted questions, gives you immediate at-home guidance, and identifies the earliest opening — often within 1 to 3 hours.
  2. Check-in (5 minutes): Brief health update form, photo ID, insurance card. Walk-ins welcome but call first if you can.
  3. Focused exam + digital X-rays (15 minutes): Dr. Ostovar, Dr. Gvozden, or Dr. Youngblood diagnoses the source of pain. CBCT 3D imaging is used for complex cases.
  4. Diagnosis and treatment plan (5 to 10 minutes): We explain what we found, the options, and the cost — before any procedure starts.
  5. Treatment (30 minutes to 2 hours): Definitive treatment in-house — root canal, extraction, abscess drainage, same-day CEREC crown, bonding, or temporary restoration.
  6. Post-treatment instructions: Written aftercare, prescriptions if needed, follow-up scheduled before you leave.

What Treatments Does East Wind Provide for Emergencies?

Definitive treatment in-house — not just diagnosis and a referral elsewhere.

Root canal therapy for infected or abscessed teeth. Removes the inflamed pulp, cleans and seals the canals, and saves the tooth. Often paired with a same-day CEREC crown to protect the now-brittle tooth.

Same-day CEREC crowns for broken teeth and post-root-canal restoration. Designed, milled, and bonded in about two hours. Skip the temporary and second appointment.

Tooth extraction when a tooth cannot be saved. Routine extractions take 20 minutes; surgical extractions up to 60. Replacement options include single tooth implants, bridges, or partial dentures.

Abscess drainage and antibiotics to stop a spreading infection.

Tooth replantation for knocked-out teeth, when you arrive within the 60-minute window.

Cosmetic dentistry bonding for chipped front teeth — done in 30 to 60 minutes.

What Should I Do at My Desk Before I Drive Over?

For a toothache: rinse with warm water, take ibuprofen (do not place aspirin on the gum), apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes.

For a knocked-out tooth: pick it up by the crown, rinse 10 seconds, place it back in the socket if you can or store in cold milk. Drive directly to our office.

For a broken tooth: save fragments in milk, rinse gently, cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax to protect your tongue. Apply gauze if bleeding.

For a lost crown or filling: temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid chewing on that side.

Call (503) 614-0198 while you’re getting ready to leave so we can prepare for your arrival.

No insurance: Our VIP Membership Plan is $299/year for adults and $199/year for children — members receive 15% off all treatment, including emergency care. CareCredit, Sunbit, and Cherry financing also available with low monthly payments.

How Do I Prevent Future Emergencies?

The biggest risk reducers: routine preventive care visits twice a year so small cavities and weakened fillings get caught early; a custom night guard if you grind or clench at night (very common in high-stress workplaces); a custom sports mouthguard for any contact or recreational sport; and avoiding hard objects like ice and popcorn kernels. A 30-minute preventive visit twice a year saves enormous time, money, and pain compared to an emergency.
