What Does a Family Dentist Cover for Aloha Families?
A family dentist treats every age group in one office, instead of sending children to a pediatric practice and adults to a separate adult dentist. For Aloha households, that means one chart, one front desk, one set of insurance cards to manage. We have run as a single-office family practice in Hillsboro since 2006.
Dr. Derek Youngblood leads our pediatric and family-preventive care — first visits, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, sports mouthguards, and gentle work with anxious kids. Dr. Merat Ostovar, FAGD, handles restorative and cosmetic care for adults, including CEREC same-day crowns and veneers. Dr. Jovan Gvozden brings 30+ years of surgical experience for implants, extractions, and bone grafting. Most Aloha families never need an outside referral.
What Ages Do You See in a Family Practice?
We see patients from their first tooth through retirement. The American Dental Association recommends a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth — that visit is mostly for parent education, a quick lap-exam, and helping the child get comfortable in the chair.
Here is what a family schedule looks like with us:
- Ages 1-3: Knee-to-knee exam in the parent’s lap, fluoride varnish, brushing coaching
- Ages 3-6: First chair exams, fluoride, sealants on baby molars when appropriate
- Ages 6-12: Sealants on permanent molars (the highest-impact cavity prevention for school-age kids), space maintainers when a baby tooth is lost early, sports mouthguards
- Teens: Wisdom-tooth monitoring, orthodontic evaluations, Invisalign Teen, athletic mouthguards
- Adults: Cleanings, fillings, crowns, implants, Invisalign for adults, cosmetic work
- Seniors: Periodontal maintenance, denture and partial care, implant-supported options

How Do You Handle Kids Who Are Nervous or Scared?
We slow down and we never force a frightened child through an appointment. The most important thing in pediatric dentistry is that your child does not develop a lasting fear of the dental office. If we have to choose between completing today’s cleaning and keeping your child willing to come back, we keep them willing to come back every time.
For children with sensory differences or autism, tell us when you book what helps — quiet room, parent in the chair, headphones, dimmed lights, longer appointment time — and we set up the visit accordingly. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available for procedures that need it, but most kids do fine without sedation once they trust the team.
What Preventive Treatments Work Best for Kids?
The two highest-impact preventive tools for children are dental sealants and fluoride varnish. Both are quick, painless, and well-supported by research.
Dental sealants are a thin plastic coating bonded into the deep grooves of the chewing surfaces of permanent molars (typically the 6-year and 12-year molars). Sealants block food and bacteria from getting trapped where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Cost: $35-$60 per tooth, usually covered 100% by insurance for kids under 14.
Fluoride varnish is brushed onto the teeth at the end of every cleaning. It strengthens enamel and reverses early decay before a cavity forms. Cost: $30-$60 per visit, often included with the pediatric cleaning fee.
Combined, sealants plus regular fluoride reduce cavities in kids by 50-80% in the back molars where most childhood cavities form.
What About Adults Who Have Avoided the Dentist for Years?
This is one of the most common situations we see in adults. You have not been in for a cleaning in 5, 10, sometimes 20 years. You know there is probably work to do. You are embarrassed.
We hear this every week and it is genuinely no problem. The first visit is an exam, a set of digital X-rays, and a conversation. We tell you what we see, what is urgent versus what can wait, and what realistic cost looks like phased over time. Nobody gets lectured. Nobody gets pressured into doing everything at once. If you need a deep cleaning, we plan for it. If you need crowns or implants, we phase the treatment so it fits your budget.

Dr. Ostovar’s Perspective
One of the most rewarding parts of practicing family dentistry in the Aloha–Hillsboro corridor is treating multiple generations under one roof — grandparents, parents, and kids all in the same afternoon. When I see a 7-year-old whose grandparents have been patients here for a decade, the trust is already built, and preventive care becomes a family norm rather than a reactive scramble when something breaks. Family practices work best when the clinical approach is proactive: early sealants, fluoride varnish at every cleaning for kids, and catching small cavities before they need root canals. That continuity of care — where I know your family’s oral health history across years — is something you simply can’t replicate by splitting care between a separate pediatric dentist, a general dentist, and a specialist.

What ages do you see at your family practice?
Every age, from a child’s first tooth (around age 1) through retirement. Dr. Derek Youngblood leads our pediatric and family-preventive care, Dr. Merat Ostovar (FAGD) handles restorative and cosmetic for adults, and Dr. Jovan Gvozden provides surgical implants and oral surgery — all under one roof so families do not get split between offices.
Do you have Spanish-speaking dental staff for Aloha patients?
Yes. Hablamos español. Our front desk and clinical team include Spanish-speaking staff, and we also serve patients in Persian (Farsi) and Bosnian. Aloha is one of the most linguistically diverse areas in Washington County and language should never be a barrier to understanding your family’s care.
Do you accept the Oregon Health Plan (OHP) for kids from Aloha?
Yes. We accept OHP for children and qualifying adults. OHP covers cleanings, exams, fluoride, sealants, fillings, extractions, and stainless steel crowns for kids. Call (503) 614-0198 with your OHP plan information and our team will verify benefits before the visit so you know what is covered.
Can my whole family be seen on the same day?
Yes. Family block scheduling lets parents, teens, and children be seen back-to-back or simultaneously across our three doctors. One trip from Aloha, everyone gets seen, back to your day. Call (503) 614-0198 and tell the front desk how many family members you want to schedule.
How much does family dental care cost without insurance?
Our VIP Membership Plan is $299/year per adult and $199/year per child. A family of four totals $996/year and includes two cleanings, two exams, all routine X-rays, fluoride visits, plus 15% off any additional treatment. No annual maximum, no waiting periods, and 100% of payments accumulate as credit toward future treatment.
How do you handle children with dental anxiety?
We move at your child’s pace and never force a frightened kid through an appointment. Our approach is tell-show-do — explain in plain language, show the tool on a finger or model, then proceed gently. For procedures that warrant it, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available, but most children do fine without sedation once they trust the team.
