The Dermal Fillers Revolution

FillersAs BOTOX© opened the world to an exciting new era of anti-aging cosmetic dermatology, dermal fillers revolutionized it. Loss of volume, resulting in deep hollows under the eyes and cheeks, jowls, folds and creases and the inevitable pull of gravity on ligaments and underlying tissue are among a few of the changes that totally alter the youthful contours of your face.

Then, in 1996, Restylane was the first “injectable filler” to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic purposes. The sister fillers of Juvederm, Perlane and Radiesse soon followed, reversing and replenishing many of the most severe effects of premature aging.

Dr. Ostovar at East Wind Dental Care in Hillsboro, provides the latest dermal fillers to reduce wrinkles and facial folds, reduce acne scars, plump up lips and help to re-sculpt other areas of your face and body.

Currently, there are three main categories for fillers that are FDA approved for use in the US that we offer in our office:
Hyaluronic Acids, Calcium Hydroxylapatite, and Poly-L-lactic acid.

Most products are made of hyaluronic acids because this category of fillers are instantly reversible and hence offer a safer approach to your desired results.

Hyaluronic Acids
A naturally existing substance in the body, immediate results, instantly reversible, range of longevity varies from thinnest product lasting 3 months to the thickest one lasting up to 2 years.

Products are listed in order from thinnest to thickest.

Q: What Are Fillers and How Do They Work?

A: If you have ever wanted the plump lips of the movie stars on the big screen or just want your lips to be a little fuller, Restylane, Perlane or Juvederm may be your solution. We use the latest dermal fillers to reduce wrinkles and facial folds, reduce acne scars and plump up lips. Dermal fillers are injected directly under smile lines, corners of the mouth or creases in the skin and can have a dramatic result, often reshaping the skin significantly. Fillers are a quick and instant solution with very little down time. From small grooves around the lips to severe facial folds, Your Laser Skin Care has a solution.

Q: What Can I Expect During a Filler Procedure?

A: Dermal fillers are injected into the skin of the face or lip, with the procedure taking only about 30 minutes. The duration of the effects will vary from individual to individual, depending on skin type, age, lifestyle, and personal degree of perfection sought by the individual. Studies have shown that the majority of treated patients enjoy the effect of Juvederm®, Restylane® and Perlane® for more than 6 months following treatment.

Fillers Today

For the nearly 2,000,000 people who had facial filler procedures in 2012, there was very good news in December, 2013. An FDA panel unanimously recommended that Juvederm Voluma XC be approved as the first derma filler for replacing volume in the mid-face, or hollow cheek area! From gravity, from weight loss, from the natural shifting of fatty deposits, the “gaunt” look has been a common concern for many men and women.

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the 2,000,000 patients using Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane and other fillers, in 2012, shows an increase of 205% since 2000. Since 2010, these fillers have seen an increase of 110%.

BOTOX, which is not a filler for wrinkles but eliminates the muscle contractions that cause them, increased 115%. In the same 3-year time period, face-lifts saw an increase of only 20%.

Restylane

FillersRestylane® is a natural product from Sweden consisting of a gel containing hyaluronic acid, which is used primarily to smooth out wrinkles and to provide a fuller lip. Dermal fillers can also be used at the corners of the mouth and above the lips to smooth out smile lines. Because hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body, it dissolves naturally over time, with effects lasting about 6 months. Perlane®

Perlane® is similar to Restylane®, but the primary difference is that the hyaluronic acid gel particles in Perlane® are thicker than those found in Restylane®. These thicker particles lift and fill the areas of injection to a greater degree than can be accomplished with Restylane® by itself. So Perlane® and Restylane® can be used together.

Perlane® also contains hyaluronic acid and is non allergenic. It dissolves naturally over time and the effect lasts about 6-8 months.

Juvederm

If you are looking for a facial filler to replace lost volume, diminish lines and wrinkles, and last, at least 6 months, Juvederm might be the best choice for you. Containing Hyaluronic acid, Juvederm eliminates the deeper nasolabial folds and fills the hollows in your cheeks or chin smoothly and naturally. Results are instantaneous, side effects are minor and it’s only a short trip to Your Filler expert, Dr. Ostovar, for Juvederm Hillsboro!

Treating Acne with Dermal Fillers

The facial fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane are well-known for reversing the effects of premature aging. But there is another usage for these treatments that is equally effective: to smooth and fill the skin’s surfaces, pitted by acne scars. These fillers all contain Hyaluronic acid, which is naturally produced by the body and easily accepted by the deeper layers of the skin. However, these fillers are not used for changes in skin pigmentation, but only for improving the skin’s texture.

Rhinoplasty Alternatives

Rhinoplasty is the medical term for a surgical procedure commonly called “a nose job.” But, today, with the use of facial fillers, a non-surgical rhinoplasty can achieve some remarkable results. Adding volume to very pin-pointed areas, may camouflage a profile “bump.” Fillers may also correct various imperfections caused by less than ideal surgical rhinoplasty. Restylane and Juvederm are usually the products of choice and, of course, the skill of the practitioner is very important.

Non-Surgical Blepharoplasty vs. Eyelid Surgery

One of the most distressing signs of premature aging is the under eye hollows, in the tear trough area. This condition is often accompanied by dark circles or pockets. And until recently, the only treatment was surgery. All eye surgery has inherent risks (scarring, infection, drooping), down-time and, for Blepharoplasty, perhaps, too high a cost. Today, injections of facial fillers provide a long-lasting, painless and affordable alternative!

Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation

Sometimes referred to as a “weak chin,” a chin that lacks strength and definition will detract from an attractive profile. In a man, a “chiseled chin” adds an element of confidence and authority; in a woman, it’s elegance. Until recently, the only treatment was surgery. But today, the use of facial fillers will create a classic contour and balance. The results are immediate, the side effects are rare and the cost is a fraction of traditional surgery.

Non-Surgical Cheek and Jow Enhancement

During the natural aging process, there is often a loss of volume in the cheek area and a corresponding sagging in the jowls. Both are, traditionally, corrected with surgery. And both may be painful, with weeks of recovery and costly, as well. But today, there are options: dermal fillers. With strategically placed injections of Restylane, Juvederm, or Voluma, the cheek volume will be replaced and the chin area will be “filled” to camouflage the appearance of jowls. Fast, minimal side effects and at a reasonable cost.

Are there any side effects?

It should be kept in mind that a small percentage of patients may experience swelling and bruising, which may last 5 to 7 days after treatment.
