We Are Only in Our Twenties
In our twenties, the world seems vast and decisions, daunting. Each day, a myriad of possibilities parades before us, taunting us with what we might become. For those of us grappling with uncertainty, rest assured, you’re not alone. We’ve all indulged in dreams of grandeur, imagining ourselves as lawyers, actors, or even songwriters. Writing this has given me newfound respect for storytellers who craft entire worlds from their imagination. That’s much like life—an unfinished script awaiting our unique perspective. High school memories linger as reminders of contrasting journeys: those with clear ambitions and those still exploring their trajectories. Whether you’re destined to follow a family tradition or carve your distinct path, it’s crucial to remain open to new experiences.
I began as a carpenter, comfortable and certain. Yet, I yearned for more, knowing my journey wasn’t merely about following my father’s footsteps. Though filled with admiration for my Dad’s work ethic, his words echoed in my mind: You’re meant for more. At twenty-three, I’m forging my unique path, eager to encounter challenges and learn from them.
How often have we mistakenly believed in careers portrayed in our favorite shows? Inspired by characters like Grey’s Anatomy’s Dr. Preston Burke or the agents in Criminal Minds, we’ve all envisioned ourselves in thrilling roles. But true fulfillment stems from pursuing our passions—not mirroring the scripted lives on TV.
Travel fascinates me now. Who knows? Perhaps my calling awaits on a rice farm in Bangladesh. Our twenties are a time of exploration and discovery, often likened to a blind archer aiming through obscured targets. We might miss occasionally, but aiming higher is better than settling.
Consider friends’ advice. In life, much is learned through trial, error, and self-discovery. My own experiences—from college attempts to bartending—have taught me invaluable lessons. I’ve learned more about what I don’t want than what I do. The mundane routine of unfulfilling work can erode self-esteem. But the struggles and triumphs of our twenties teach resilience.
Life’s unpredictability can catch you off guard. I’ve faced profound losses but emerged with renewed clarity. As Les Brown wisely stated, Don’t judge your possibilities based on where you are now. Your current situation isn’t permanent; view it as a stepping stone.
In our twenties, we often seek guidance across life’s crossroads. Joe Frazier’s perspective resonates: even when feeling lost, forgiveness and self-discovery shed new light. Never confuse what you do with who you are. Your worth is intrinsic, not dictated by titles or societal expectations.
