Tyler: Welcome, Becky. What first drew you to Nathan Hale’s story?
Becky: It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when my fascination with Nathan Hale began; it’s almost as if I’ve always been engaged. My family experienced a tragic loss with the death of my mom’s 16-year-old brother in a car accident just before I was born. Learning about Nathan Hale when I was around four or five, his story resonated deeply with me, partly because of the premature loss my family endured. The grief I witnessed helped me appreciate the void left by Hale’s death, and he became a significant figure for me from an early age.
Diving Into Nathan Hale’s Narrative
Tyler: Were you ever hesitant about writing a book covering such a significant historical figure like Nathan Hale?
Becky: Not at all! I jumped right into it. Nathan Hale wasn’t just a heroic figure; he was quite the charmer. My husband playfully reminds me that Hale would be 257 years old now, likely wearing dentures. However, historians seem to overlook his significance, seeing him as an inexperienced young man. They dismiss him as naive for underestimating the dangers of his spy mission. While it’s true that espionage in those days was scorned, I strongly believe historians undervalue Nathan Hale’s honor and integrity.
The Remarkable Integrity of Nathan Hale
Tyler: Apart from physical appearance, what makes Nathan Hale a figure people should admire?
Becky: Nathan Hale was a paragon of integrity. Back in 18th-century America, one’s honor was paramount. A promise made was a promise kept. Life was about self-sufficiency, with little reliance on others’ charity or government aid. Hale’s integrity shone brightly, even as he faced his death, remaining steadfast in his principles. Despite facing inevitable defeat, he never wavered in his dedication to liberty, speaking with courage at the moment of his demise. He embodied integrity, and that continues to inspire me.
Why Hasn’t Nathan Hale’s Story Been Told Before?
Tyler: Halestorm is the first adult novel about Nathan Hale. Why do you think his story hasn’t been tackled in historical fiction before?
Becky: It’s a mystery to me. I searched for a novel about him for years but found none. Some might think readers dislike stories where the hero dies, but great authors like Dickens have defied that convention. Children’s authors have addressed Hale’s life, but for adult readers, his attributes of honor and bravery seemed overlooked until now.
The Fictional Love Story
Tyler: In your novel, there’s a romantic subplot involving Nathan and Alice. Is there any truth to that?
Becky: Their tragic love story is purely fictional. There’s no historical evidence of such a relationship. I created the bond between Nathan and Alice, adding a biological link and family resistance to their union to heighten the drama. It was essential for the narrative, though entirely invented.

Tyler: What happened to Alice after Nathan’s execution?
Becky: Alice later married and had children, living to eighty-eight. Her rumored last words were about Nathan, showcasing how profound his memory was for her, adding a layer of poignancy to the narrative.

Tyler: What was the most surprising revelation from your research?
Becky: The chaotic nature of the Revolution truly surprised me. The fight wasn’t strictly Americans against the British; it was a struggle against oppressive governance. This historical understanding shaped my views on government power, recognizing the parallels between then and now—highlighting ongoing battles against corruption.
Why Nathan Hale’s Story Matters Today
Tyler: Do you see any parallels between the American Revolution and today’s United States?
Becky: Absolutely. Take the Boston Tea Party, for example. It wasn’t just about a tax on tea but a protest against corporate-government collusion. That spirit of resistance against cronyism echoes today, showing the timelessness of Hale’s bravery and the need for vigilant protection of freedoms.

Tyler: I hear you’re working on another book about Benedict Arnold. Can you share a bit about it?
Becky: After Halestorm, I became captivated by the entwining stories of Nathan Hale and Benedict Arnold. My upcoming novel explores Arnold’s supposed treason, shedding light on misinformation and viewing it through the eyes of a character inspired by Hale’s principles. It’s about uncovering truths and challenging perceptions embedded in historical narratives.
